Airedale by Modine^TM, the critical cooling specialists, is celebrating apprenticeships  this month, with a special mention to apprentice George Hardesty who has graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering

George joined Airedale by Modine as an apprentice in 2018, having achieved a Level 3 qualification at a local technical college. George’s apprenticeship with Airedale came with a commitment from the company to support him through both the Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND). Airedale agreed to fund the practical-based courses and offered one day per week study leave. During this early apprenticeship period, George was able to work in a variety of departments at Airedale, allowing him to learn about the business whilst discovering his areas of interest.

On successful completion of the HND at Bradford College, Airedale agreed to further support George through a mechanical engineering degree. This saw George complete the 2-year course on a day-release basis at Sheffield Hallam University, whilst continuing his workplace training and development with Airedale.

George said,

“In the early days of my degree I found it very challenging, and quickly realised that if I were to succeed, I would have to make sacrifices. I went from studying for a couple of hours on an evening for my HND, to studying every evening and weekend for my degree. Whilst it was intense, I knew it was only for a limited time and this helped me to get through it.”

George added,

“Graduating whilst working has opened up more professional opportunities to me. Along with engineering qualifications, I have 6 years of invaluable work experience and so can apply for more senior roles. I am also hugely grateful not to have the debt that my friends who went to university have.”

Adrian Trevelyan, Vice President General Manager, said,

“Apprenticeships are core to our employee growth strategy. We are prepared to invest in formal technical education, from 1 year at college, through to degree level for all of our apprentices. We currently have over 30 apprentices in our  business, all of whom have opportunities to progress into production management, production engineering, engineering design, programmable controls, research and development and other career roles.”

Adrian concluded,

“We invest heavily in our employees to allow us deliver meaningful employment; this is something we are proud of at Airedale. We have many people who started as apprentices or in training roles, who now hold leadership positions – myself included.”

George is now looking forward to moving into a qualified position within the Airedale software development team.
