Controls Development Engineer

The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Controls Development Engineer to work as part of the Controls Department based in Leeds.

The Role

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Develop Niagara framework applications and widgets using Java 1.8 and JavaScript
  • Write short Python scripts for data piping between cloud platforms
  • Develop new features for system optimisers incorporating AI and ML for control systems
  • Develop and support IoT, remote monitoring and predictive maintenance projects
  • Thinking outside the box to develop new features and bring them to market
  • Where possible, improve the existing codebase
  • Support the design team when needed. Become familiar with control systems strategies for HVAC applications using Carel, Trend, Tridium Niagara and Siemens controls platforms
  • Contribute to project documentation including control philosophies, description of operations and new product literature for marketing
  • Attend internal and external client/site meetings as necessary to determine initial scope of works and correct functionality during commissioning
  • Understand the system as a whole and actively work with the support team to suggest process or efficiency improvements where possible
  • Work with the Research & Development department to incorporate new technologies and features into projects and report improvements back
  • Responsibility for the training and mentoring of new engineers and apprentices
  • Provide technical support for site engineers and customers as required
  • Some site work may occasionally be required

Skills & Experience

  • Have some demonstrable experience with Java or other OOP language
  • Hold a technical degree and/or have relevant experience
  • Experience with programmable controllers is desirable but not essential, especially:
    • Tridium Niagara 4 software and controllers
  • Capable of understanding control strategies
  • Experience with HVAC applications and knowledge of cooling and heating systems is desirable but not essential
  • Have knowledge of IT systems and communication networks
  • Knowledge of BMS/DCIM and common communication protocols (Modbus, BACnet, TCP/IP) is desirable but not essential
  • Logical and methodical approach to problem solving using own initiative is a must
  • Have good written & communication skills
  • Team player
